Santa Claus is coming to town

(Dec. 22, 2010) Santa Claus is on his way with Christmas Eve only two days away. According to weather reports, even with the freezing temperatures, he will beat the snow which may come on Sunday.

Winter began here yesterday at 6:38 p.m. with the winter solstice bringing the shortest day - and the longest night - of the year. But it's all lighter from now; days are growing longer.

Enjoy checking out the news and announcements in Recorder Community Newspapers from the comfort of your cozy home right here online. Anyone interested in joining the communication stream via Recorder blogs is invited to call me at (908) 832-7420 or e-mail panderson@recordernewspapers.com. It's FREE!

Maybe a white Christmas

(Dec. 16, 2010) Snow covers the ground today after an overnight fall. Temperatures are well below freezing, so we may have a white Christmas after winter starts next week.

Although pretty to look at snow can cause a lot of problems, especially on the roadways. We all need to be extra cautious drivers ... and walkers. It only takes a second to slip and fall on snow-covered paths.

But children are enjoying the snow by sledding and building snowmen, even fanning angels in the snow.

But there are lots of other activities, with or without snow, listed in Recorder Community Newspapers. Check out the details right here online at the papers' websites and in their blogs there.

Three weeks and counting

(Dec. 2, 2010) Can it be -- only 23 days until Christmas? Wow, we better get going. So much to do, so many presents to buy, it hardly seems like enough time to get it all done.

But the best part of the holidays is going to all the special programs for the season, especially if a family member is performing. Check out Recorder Newspapers here for a schedule of tree lightings, Santa visits, concerts and other shows. Their online blogs also have some listings of holiday things to do as well as some holiday messages.

Over the river and through the woods ...

(Nov. 22, 2010) As the song goes, "Over the river and through the woods, to Grandmother's house we go." And this grandmother, like so many others, is busy getting ready for the Thanksgiving feast. Thanksgiving Day, a federal legal holiday, is the fourth Thursday of the month of November, this week, Nov. 25.

Although the big bird seems daunting, it's actually the easiest part of the meal. All the turkey needs is a little seasoning and roasting in the oven. The hard part is it's so heavy and it takes up the whole oven while other stuff needs cooking.

The most challenging part of the dinner is the seating. First, having enough seats for everyone, considering lefties (left-handers who need to sit on a left end) and kiddies (little ones who need to sit in high chairs in a spill-proof area, but still close to Momma).

So, now that the house is cleaned, I'm working on the table set-up: one big one in the dining room, another in the kitchen, a smaller one in the foyer, and one for the teens in the rec room, plus a long serving table. And chairs have to be collected from all over the house, which is Grandpa's job. That should do it until the cooking begins: stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, brussels sprouts, pumpkin pie.

Thanksgiving is many people's favorite holiday because it is such a simple family day - a time to savor how we all have been blessed at a joyful meal with friends and relatives.

Then the busy winter holiday begins - with decorating and shopping, along with parties, benefits and shows. Read all about what's happening in your neighborhoods in Recorder Community Newspapers right here online and in their blogs.

Anyone interested in joining the growing list of Recorder bloggers is welcome to call me at (908) 832-7420 or e-mail panderson@recordernewspapers. I will help you with this simple 21st century communication tool. It's free and all you need is a computer and an e-mail.

Thursday is Veterans Day

(Nov. 8, 2010) Thursday, Nov. 11, is Veterans Day, a federal legal holiday honoring veterans. Observances are scheduled throughout the area. Check out Recorder Community Newspapers for details right here online.

Here is a brief history: World War I, known at the time as "The Great War," officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France. However, fighting had ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. For that reason, Nov. 11, 1918, generally is regarded as the end of "the war to end all wars."

In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations …"

An Act approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday, a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as "Armistice Day." Armistice Day was primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I, but in 1954, after World War II had required the greatest mobilization of soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen in the nation’s history; after American forces had fought aggression in Korea, the 83rd Congress, at the urging of the veterans service organizations, amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting in its place the word "Veterans." With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, Nov. 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

The original concept for the celebration was for a day observed with parades and public meetings and a brief suspension of business beginning at 11 a.m. Now most governmental offices are closed for the day.

Veterans Day continues to be observed on Nov. 11, to preserve the historical significance of the date and help focus attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day: a celebration to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

Fall BACK this weekend

(Nov. 4, 2010) Daylight-saving time (DST) ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, returning this area to Eastern Standard Time.

So before retiring Saturday night, set your clocks BACK one hour. You regain the hour you lost earlier in the year when DST began with setting clocks ahead one hour. Although mornings will seem lighter, darkness will come sooner each afternoon.

Currently DST begins each year at 2 a.m. on the second Sunday in March, with clocks moving ahead one hour. Standard time begins each year at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday in November, with clocks moving one hour back.

Prior to 2007, the DST change in the United States occurred in April and standard time resumed in October. The law extending DST by almost two months was signed into law by George W. Bush in 2005.

Tips like this one about DST can be found right here in the 15 online Recorder Community Newspapers where some 60 bloggers also are communicating. Check them out.

Boo! time

(Oct. 27, 2010) It's time for ghosts and goblins, princesses and cowboys, and more. Sunday, Oct. 31, is Halloween when kids of all ages dress up in scary, sometimes not so scary, costumes and have fun with candy and all kinds of "trick or treat."

Years ago, they used to roam up on and down their neighborhood streets on Halloween night, ringing doorbells and shouting "trick or treat" as a petition for candy from those who answered their doors. Nowadays, at the end of the month, there are many other Halloween celebrations deemed safer, including "trick or trunk," school parties, neighborhood parades, farm fests and more. Read all about them in Recorder Community Newspapers and in many of their blogs right here online.

Any community group or individual interested in joining the more than 60 Recorder bloggers at any of 15 online newspapers is invited to call me at (908) 832-7420 or e-mail panderson@recordernewspapers.com and I will explain all about this free offer. Voice from long ago

(Oct. 20, 2010) Blogging has some unexpected benefits. Among them is connecting with folks from long ago in your life. That is what happened to my husband and me this week. I won't go into the details, but suffice it to say we discovered an unusual one from 1980 via blogs. You never know who is reading your posts.

Exactly 30 years ago, we hosted a young Amish school teacher who was traveling from her home in Ohio to New England. While visiting back home in the summer of 1980, we met her through mutual friends in the Burton-Middlefield area of northeastern Ohio, known as Amish country. Since that time, she has married her friend in Vermont, graduated from Smith College and written a book about her life. If you want to read more about her, click on to Saloma Furlong in my followers to the right. What a story!

Anyway, readers have an opportunity to join the growing list of bloggers at Recorder Community Newspapers. Any community group or individual interested in communicating via a blog at the newspapers' websites is invited to contact me at (908) 832-7420 or panderson@recordernewspapers.com. It is simple and free. All you need is a computer and an e-mail.

Check out the 60 some bloggers already online. Their messages are as varied as our communities, from book reviews to entertainment to chit-chat to health advice, library events, opinion and more.

Watch out for deer

(Oct. 14, 2010) Daylight is waning and deer rut (breeding season) is starting. Expecially at dawn and dusk, deer are running almost oblivious to traffic. So be extra careful when driving during the morning and evening rush hours to avoid a costly encounter with a deer.

Living out in the country, I have been extremely fortunate not to have collided with a deer. There are plenty of them around. But I know many folks who have had a run-in with one. Physical injury and car damage can be tremendous. So watch out.

Tips like this one can be found in the many blogs online here at Recorder Community Newspapers. Some five dozen bloggers are communicating at the 15 newspapers' websites.

Rain, rain, go away

(Oct. 5, 2010) After a summer's drought we're getting all the rain that didn't fall over the past three months. Enough already! Farmers need to harvest their hay and corn, but those crops need to be dry. Folks along rivers and streams are worried about flooding.

On a personal note, my husband and I are having our annual cider squeeze this weekend. Since it's an outdoor affair, we're praying for a clear day, temperate day.

In fact, all kinds of fall events are scheduled in Recorder Newspapers' territory. Read all about them in the newspapers and online right here, plus in their 50+ blogs.

Dog days of summer

(7-30-10) Yep, they're here -- the dog days of summer, those hot, humid, sultry days in July and August in the Northern Hemisphere. Long may she wave

(June 14, 2010) Although the origin of Flag Day dates to the late 19th century, its inspiration goes back to 1777 when on June 14 in Philadelphia the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution adopting the American flag with 13 stripes and 13 stars using the colors of red for valor, white for purity and blue for justice. In 1949 President Harry Truman signed an Act of Congress that National Flag Day be observed every June 14. However, Flag Day is not a national holiday.

Back in business

(April 7, 2010) I'm back in business after a few days of holiday and reconstruction! My ceiling almost caved in, literally. Due to a leaking water pipe upstairs, part of the ceiling in my home office filled with water and started dripping a few days before Easter. It wasn't until I saw the indoor "rain" that I knew there was a problem. Thank goodness our oldest son and daughter-in-law hosted the family holiday party at their home.

But now all is well: the wet ceiling removed, pipe fixed, sheetrock replaced and painted, office back in place with wire connections restored. We're ready again for business.

Business is helping set up blogs for community groups and individuals interested in communicating right on Recorder Newspapers' Web sites. Blogging is a real-time, multi-media, 21st century, online communication tool. The connection to Recorder is easy and free. New beginnings

(March 25, 2010) Spring has sprung. Saturday, March 20, was the first day of spring this year and what a day it was. The Earth is finally warming and green is returning to the land. Bulbs are sprouting and peeper frogs are singing. Life is beginning again in nature.

Also, the health care reform bill has passed the U.S. Congress and been signed (March 23) by the president after many months of wrangling. Some still are not pleased by this historic legislation; however, there is no denying that many Americans will benefit as they have from Social Security over the years. Too bad the debate is so politically motivated on this new beginning of a healthy life for so many.

Some of the bill's benefits include:
Those with pre-existing medical conditions may not be denied insurance coverage, young people up to age 26 may remain on their parents' insurance plans, insurance premiums will be subsidized for low-wage earners, large employers will be required to provide health insurance for their employees, and the "doughnut hole" gap in Medicare prescription drug coverage for seniors will close up.

Meantime, discussion continues on the pros and cons. Soon organizations will be offering programs to explain how the bill affects folks in this area. Information about them will appear in Recorder Community Newspapers and their blogs right here.

Those interested in joining the growing list of Recorder bloggers may call me at (908) 832-7420 or e-mail panderson@recordernewspapers.com to learn how to sign up. Blogging is a real-time, multi-media, online communication tool. The process is free and simple.

Rain, rain go away ...

(March 16, 2010) That was the song this past weekend as record rains continued to fall throughout the state and into yesterday causing major flooding in many areas. But today the sun is shining and hopefully flood waters, aggravated by melting snow, will start to recede.

Falling trees downed wires, causing power outages and closed roadways, even smashed property. Cleanup is ongoing. Hopefully, normal life will resume soon.

Spring is just around the corner (March 20) signaled by the return to daylight- saving time early Sunday, March 14. And after this year's stormy winter, area residents can hardly wait.

Meantime, Recorder bloggers are communicating regularly on a variety of subjects, keeping our online readers abreast of what's happening in the area. When folks log on to Recorder Community Newspapers to check the headlines, they also can peruse some 30+ blogs listed among the 15 papers.

Any individual or organization interested in joining the growing group of bloggers may find out more about blogging, an online multi-media communication tool, by contacting me at panderson@recordernewspapers.com or (908) 832-7420. I am available to help with the free, simple setup and connection.

Two big WOWs!

(March 9, 2010) First, the snow finally is melting. After weeks of snow-covered yards, drives and roads, we're finally seeing some green ... and venturing out and about.

Second is this week's report from the N.J. Press Association. That is: Newspaper Web sites continue to be the most used and valued sites for consumers seeking credible and trustworthy local content and advertising online, according to a new survey conducted by comScore for the Newspaper Association of America. Some 57 percent of the 3,050 respondents identified local newspaper Web sites as the top online source for local information - ahead of the totals for all other media. And you're reading one of those trusted Web sites.

Recorder Community Newspapers welcomes individuals and organizations interested in spreading their news or chit-chat to join our growing list of Recorder bloggers who are blogging right here on Recorder Web sites. To sign up is free and easy. The multi-media process is simple. Bloggers simply sign in online, type their messages and attach photos and/or videos if they wish, hit the publish button and their blog appears at their newspaper's Web site.

Back home again

(March 2, 2010) My husband and I just got back home from more than a week in South Carolina, specifically Isle of Palms, a bit east of Charleston. Although the whole East Coast is experiencing colder than normal temperatures this winter, we enjoyed 45-64 degrees with no snow during our stay down south. What a jolt to come back to a nor'easter here!

But, we were able to check out the doings up north by logging on to Recorder Newspapers' Web sites. I was interested especially in the blogs there since I am helping start them.
