The name comes from the ancient belief that Sirius, also called the Dog Star, was responsible for the steamy weather. Sirius is the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major and also the brightest star in the heavens after the Sun.

Vacation time

Happy birthday to us
(July 4, 2010) Today is the Fourth of July, Independence Day, our nation's birthday. Throughout the land, Americans are celebrating the birth of this free nation in 1776 with parades, picnics, concerts, fireworks and more. What a beautiful day for them all!

Happy Father's Day
(June 20, 2010) Today is Father's Day, a time to celebrate all fathers, grandfathers and those who serve as fathers, who sometimes take a back seat to mothers and their day. So to all dads, have a happy day today with your families; you deserve the celebration.

Long may she wave
(June 14, 2010) Although the origin of Flag Day dates to the late 19th century, its inspiration goes back to 1777 when on June 14 in Philadelphia the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution adopting the American flag with 13 stripes and 13 stars using the colors of red for valor, white for purity and blue for justice. In 1949 President Harry Truman signed an Act of Congress that National Flag Day be observed every June 14. However, Flag Day is not a national holiday.
